To supplement the laboratory inspection program, EH&S is requesting laboratories conduct periodic safety self inspections. Self inspections can assist with increasing compliance with physical safety in the lab, such as labeling, storage and hazardous waste. They also assist with increasing the safety culture in the lab. To best utilize this resource, EH&S recommends conducting weekly self-inspections where all employees get involved by alternating who conducts the inspection each week. PIs should also take part in the process. These self-inspections can then be discussed in the lab meetings. This is in line with OSU’s Workplace Safety Culture Task Force Report.
Conducting Self Inspections
There are two ways to conduct self-inspections:
- Under the laboratory’s self-inspection tab on SciShield. All employees have access to the laboratory self-inspections. It can be done on any computer, tablet, or cell phone.
- Use of the PDF version of the self-inspection and save in your lab.
EH&S can also create a printable sheet for the lab to document the self-inspections, which includes a QR code that takes you directly to the self-inspection page on SciShield. Those will be available as a downloadable document during lab inspections or as requested.
