Special categories of hazardous waste

  • Gas cylinders and aerosol cans that are NOT open to the atmosphere (even if functionally empty)
  • Universal waste (a category of hazardous waste that everyon generates) - separate training presentation available
    • batteries
    • mercury-containing equipment
    • light bulbs and tubes - fluorescent, high-energy discharge, uv lamps
  • Broken glass
    • not defined as hazardous waste, but is a physical hazard to personnel
    • collect in puncture-resistant cardboard box that is small enough to carry when it is full
