Toxicity characteristic

Chemicals that cause injury or illness through any route of exposure are considered "toxic". While almost any chemical is toxic if the exposure is high enough, this category relates to the most toxic or persistent chemicals that may cause serious injury, sickness, or even death from small exposures.

Examples of toxic chemicals:

  • chloroform
  • phenol mixtures
  • sodium azide
  • acrylamide
  • cyanides
  • certain metals (arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, selenium, silver)
