Lockout/Tagout (Control of Hazardous Energy)

Lockout/Tagout Overview

The OSU Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Program establishes requirements for the lockout of energy-isolating devices. The intent of locking out a device is to ensure that equipment is de-energized and isolated from all potentially hazardous energy sources before employees perform service or maintenance tasks where the unexpected energizing, start-up, or release of stored energy could cause injury. Tagging out a device is an additional safety precaution that communicates who has de-energized the equipment - tags / locks must only be removed or altered by the individual that placed them once the work is complete.

Program Details

  • Choose the appropriate LOTO device for a piece of equipment
    • Choosing the correct LOTO device depends on the type of equipment, the energy source(s), and the mechanism for energizing the equipment - ensure the LOTO device fits the equipment correctly and is designed to ensure continuous de-energization.
    • Adhere to manufacturer recommendations when available, as this will ensure maximum compatibility between the LOTO device and the equipment.
    • If you have any questions or concerns regarding the correct LOTO device to use, contact Brett Zimmerman or call (541) 737-4046
